Genre

 What is genre?

genre is a way for the media to categorise films. this is done by the analysis of the aesthetic and/or narrative of the film. genre is used commonly to market movies, for example if its a rom-com the most appropriate way to advertise it would be in women's magazines as that is the stereotypical target audience. however, if its an action movie it might be advertised in a mens fitness magazine. Genre is most commonly used for the audience to be able to outline the narrative of a movie before they decide to watch it. when someone wants to go and watch a movie they choose a genre to go see, assuming it will follow the stereotypical narrative of other movies of that genre. certain genres provoke certain emotions so the audience chooses accordingly.

What is a Sub-Genre?

A Sub-genre is used when a films genre falls into a more broad category such as Horror, Comedy, Drama.
within all of those genres we have different variants, for example there is Psychological Horror, Supernatural Horror and Slasher Horror. these are all under one genre, but the Sub-Genre is the further description of the type of genre

What is a Hybrid-Genre?

A Hybrid-Genre is when two or more broad genres blend together within a movie. this means that movies are open to a wider audience. For example a rom-com targets stereotypically both men and women as they have the romance for the female audience, and they have the comedy for the male audience.
